Ward captures first DIRTcar Nationals Gator at Volusia
Seeking his first ever DIRTcar Nationals Gator trophy, Tim Ward returned to action on Monday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) aboard the Ultimate Equipment Rentals No. 4TW Modified.
With the massive field of 113 DIRTcar Modifieds separated amongst six groups, Ward’s sixth-fastest qualifying effort in his 19-car group locked him on the third row of his preliminary feature. Soaring ahead of pole-starting Michael Altobelli on the fifth circuit, Tim paced the remaining 16 circuits to secure his first DIRTcar Nationals victory and his first win of the season. He finished ahead of Altobelli, Ty Norder, Randy Giroux, and Eric Moon.
For another round of prelims on Tuesday, Tim followed up the fourth-fastest time in his group with a third-place finish in the 20-lap prelim, chasing Charlie Mefford and Kenny Wallace across the line.
On Wednesday, Ward posted an eighth-place finish in his prelim after recording the eighth-fastest qualifying lap.
With the top 18 in points competing in a preliminary on Thursday, Tim started 13th and clawed forward three spots to claim a top-10 finish.
Following a second-place finish in Friday’s preliminary, Ward suffered right-front suspension issues in Saturday’s $5,000-to-win DIRTcar Nationals finale that led to an early exit.
